Australia's first Indigenous Skate Camp
Combining Skateboarders relastionship with the landscape & Aboriginal relationship with Country
Thursday, April 11, 2019
For the first time in Australia, Skateworks "The Balance Stick" as Australia's first Aboriginal skate camp was delivered in April 2019. Skateworks Connecting urban Ballarat Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander youth with Culture & Country through Skateboarding. The location was Angelsea Recreation YMCA Camp Victoria. Skateworks partnered with YMCA To deliver the camp & Badac ( Ballarat and District Aboriginal co-operative) to liaise with marginalised Indigenous families in Ballarat, supervising the kids during camp and transporting them to and from camp. We would like to thank Scotty & Eden & Jason from YMCA Angelsea for their commitment, motivation & all-round awesomeness. Thank you also to Jucmedia for a great video. Most of all thank you to the kids for their guts, creativity & stoke. Welcome to skateboarding kids. Brodie Jarret you were a colossus. Thank you very much for your spark.
Skateworks Australia, The land is our Instructor
Our connection to Country is always with us through Skateboarding
Sunday, May 27, 2018
The Balance Stick is a School holiday program specifically designed to create the outcome of which Elders and Community representatives desire for their Youth. At Skateworks, the outcome is everything.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders have identified that the three prime objectives for Community in Australia are firstly health including mental health, secondly education and thirdly Youth’s diminishing connection with Country.
It is primarily the third of these concerns that Skateworks School holiday program concentrates on. Reconnecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Youth with Country through Skateboarding.
